Upholstered dining chairs: choosing the perfect seat
A comfortable dining chair can make all the difference when it comes to lingering at the table after a family meal or dinner party, long after the food has been cleared.
In my own home, we often find ourselves spending hours around the dining table when entertaining, and comfort plays a significant role in keeping everyone gathered together. Although I always plan to move to the living room after dinner, it rarely happens—and I like to think it’s because everyone is relaxed and content in their chairs.
Given how much time we spend sitting in dining chairs—whether for meals, engaging conversations or even working from home—it’s essential to have something that offers lasting comfort. For me, this is non-negotiable.
If you enjoy hosting, upholstered dining chairs bring an added sense of luxury, elevating your dining room into a space where guests feel pampered and welcome. Their plush design not only adds style but also promotes long, enjoyable conversations in a relaxed atmosphere, making them a worthwhile investment.
While comfort is a primary consideration, there are several other factors to consider when selecting the right upholstered dining chairs for your space.
Here are some key points to keep in mind.
Craftsmanship and Durability
Durability is key, particularly if your chairs are used daily. High-quality materials will ensure that they withstand the test of time, so pay attention to the frame; hardwood frames will provide strong support and longevity.
At Beaumont & Fletcher, we use seasoned beechwood for the dining chair frame, which is dowelled, screwed and glued together for extra strength. The legs are part of the frame itself, rather than being screwed in at the end, for added robustness.
It’s also worth checking the stability of the chairs. Wobbly chairs may indicate poor craftsmanship or an imbalanced design. Solid, well-made dining chairs should feel sturdy and safe.
Investing in well-made dining chairs means they will not only withstand daily use but also maintain their beauty and functionality for years.
Upholstery
Incorporating luxurious upholstery also allows you to play with colour, texture, and pattern in the most beautiful way. Rich jewel tones, soft neutrals, or intricate prints can reflect your personal style and create a striking contrast with your dining table or walls.
It’s worth considering how often the dining chairs will be used. If they are for occasional use, you can more or less opt for whatever you like, but is they are for daily use you should really consider a more durable fabric.
We tend to opt for natural fabrics, such as cotton, wool or linen, which are breathable and soft, and sometimes we create the most exquisite pieces using our luxurious silk velvet. Leather is also a good option.
Our bespoke dining chairs can be upholstered in fabric from our own collection, or elsewhere, so it means there are endless possibilities to create something that works perfectly with your interior.
Decoration
When selecting bespoke dining chairs, like those we craft at Beaumont & Fletcher, you can often personalize each piece with decorative details such as nailing, piping, and trimmings. These custom touches can significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal, adding a refined sense of sophistication.
As well as the more typical decorations, we also offer the option to add skirts, fringes, and even exquisite hand embroidery for a truly personalized touch. Our embroidery designs look stunning on both the front and back of the chair, whether you prefer a bold statement or a subtle, delicate detail. You can explore some of our designs here.
Size
Choosing the right size of dining chair for your table is crucial for both comfort and functionality. The height of the seat should allow for ample legroom, with a recommended 10-12 inches between the seat and the tabletop. If the seat is too high, guests can feeling cramped, while seats that are too low may make it uncomfortable to eat or engage in conversation.
Side or carver
Traditionally, a carver chair – a dining chair with arms – would come in pairs and be used at either end of a table, along with side chairs. Nowadays, they are widely created as full sets for dining tables, offering the ultimate in comfort and support. It really depends on the look you are trying to achieve.
We offer both options so that customers can choose what works best for their setting. Carvers add an element of formality and comfort but take up more space. If your dining table is narrow, armless chairs might be a better fit.
Conclusion
Luxury upholstered dining chairs are more than just seating—they are an investment in comfort, style, and craftsmanship. Their ability to combine elegance with practicality makes them a standout addition to any dining room. Whether you are hosting an elaborate dinner party or enjoying a simple family meal, these chairs create an ambiance of refinement and luxury, ensuring that every dining experience is memorable.
